5 Tips for Rumi’s Demon Patterns Makeup

Here are 5 tips for recreating Rumi’s demon patterns makeup from the movie K-pop Demon Hunters.

Start with water-based face paint that comes in a pan. It’s beginner-friendly and you will get the most amount of product for the price. You just need water and a paint brush. The makeup dries quickly to a matte finish and doesn’t smear unless it gets in contact with water or sweat. Do a practice run to make sure the makeup feels and looks good and you don’t have any skin reactions to the makeup. You don’t want to start itching the night of Halloween or your cosplay event.

Choose the right makeup color. Rumi’s demon patterns have both purple and a lighter iridescent color towards the end of the movie. The darker purple is definitely more noticeable and a lighter color is more low-key. Your skin tone may decide what color looks best as well. On my medium tan skin tone the lighter color eyeliner pencils from Dollar Tree didn’t really show. I recommend Snazaroo water-based face paint in Lilac for the affordable price, matte finish of the makeup, and this color will show up on the most skin tones.

Use a reference image. You can always rewatch K-pop Demon Hunters to get inspiration, but if you want a still image you can search Pinterest. Or better yet, download my Demon Pattern references. I made one for Rumi (half-demon), Jinu (male demon), and arms (based on Rumi). Rumi’s face patterns are on her forehead, and near her ears and neck, she doesn’t have demon marks that go across her nose the way Jinu does.

Start with thin lines and build up to chunky areas. The patterns branch off into twists and turns. To keep it simple, think of a lightning bolt. Also the lines purposely have sharp corners and jagged edges. This is in contrast to the Honmoon (the magical shield that protects people) which is rounded and wavy shapes.

Consider using clear UV face paint such as Bad Color’s clear UV makeup. This face paint goes on clear, but shows up under a black light. You’ll need to buy a special blacklight flashlight or lamp to see the patterns. This makes for a fun surprise transformation.
