DIY Saja Boys Hat Tutorial – Easy and Affordable!

Want to bring some K-pop Demon Hunters magic to your next costume party? This DIY Saja Boys Hat Tutorial is just for you. This isn’t about creating a detailed cosplay piece, but rather a fun and affordable costume piece that captures the spirit of those iconic characters from the animated movie.

You probably have most of the supplies sitting around your house already. With just a basic witch’s hat, some card stock, beads, and a few other simple materials, you can transform an ordinary Halloween accessory into something pretty special. The whole process is straightforward enough that you could easily make several hats if you’re planning a themed party.

What Is a Saja Boy Hat and Why Make One?

A Saja boy hat is the headgear worn by characters in the animated movie K-pop Demon Hunters. It’s based on traditional Korean gat headwear, which has deep cultural significance you can learn more about from Asia Society.

This DIY version creates an easy and affordable costume. It’s not meant to be a detailed cosplay – just a fun way to dress up for Halloween or themed parties.

What makes this project great:

  • Uses simple materials you can find at home or buy cheaply
  • Takes less than an hour to complete
  • Perfect for group costumes since you can make multiple hats at once
  • Works well for kids’ parties or K-pop themed events

The things you’ll need are

  • black witch’s hat
  • beaded necklace
  • black cord or ribbon
  • Cardstock
  • Tape or hot glue
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

The first step is to take the cardstock or cardboard and trace a 4 in or 10 cm diameter circle. Make a dot in the center then measure 2 in on each side and just keep rotating the ruler around the center dot. Then trace the circle, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Cut out the circle with the scissors. Poke a hole in the center and cut to make it bigger. If you want to measure it, it’s about 1 in or 2.5 cm diameter.

Next take the hat and turn it inside out. Stick the pointy end into the cardstock hole. Then push it up inside the hat so it makes this round shape. The fabric will be twisted into the hole. This is what is looks like inside.

Next cut the cord or ribbon into 2 pieces. I’m using an old badge cord from a comic convention. It’s about 16 in or 40 cm long. These are used to tie the hat to your head. So make it shorter if these hats are for kids. Then cut some tape and attach the cord to the inside rim of the hat. I’m using black masking tape, but duct tape or hot glue will hold better. Then attach the cord to the other side and make sure it’s even.

Then take the beaded necklace. This is an old plastic mardi gras necklace.. Cut it, so it’s one long piece about 28 inches or 71 cm long. And then tape this to the outside rim of the hat. Make sure the other side is even with the cords as well and tape it into place. And that’s it!
